Packing for a 15kg soft bag

Light-aircraft weight limits shape every fly-in safari. What to bring, what to leave in Nairobi, and why laundry solves most of it.

Packing for a 15kg soft bag

The limit is real

Most scheduled and charter bush flights allow 15kg per person in a soft bag, hard cases refused. This is not an airline formality — it is a loading calculation for a small aircraft on a short dirt strip at altitude.

Excess can sometimes be carried on a later flight or bought as an extra seat. Both are avoidable with a little discipline.

Laundry changes the maths

Every camp we use launders daily, usually same-day. Pack three days of clothing rather than ten and the bag solves itself.

For riders

Bring your own helmet if you can — fit matters and camp spares are a compromise. Half chaps and jodhpurs pack flat; tall boots rarely justify their weight.

Gloves, a buff, sunglasses with a retainer and a lightweight long-sleeved shirt do more for comfort in the saddle than anything else in the bag.

Leave it in Nairobi

City clothes, spare hard luggage and anything for the coast leg can be stored securely and returned to you on the way through. We arrange that as a matter of course.

Conservation

What a private conservancy actually is

Land leased from the families who own it, bed-night fees that fund those leases, and rules set locally rather than nationally. A plain explanation of the model.
