Safari with children, without the strain

Age guidance, drive lengths, camp choices and the small structural decisions that decide whether a family safari is restful or relentless.

Safari with children, without the strain

Structure beats itinerary

Families rarely struggle because of the destination. They struggle because of transfer days, early starts stacked back to back, and camps where adults and children must do the same thing at the same time.

A private house with its own vehicle, guide and cook solves nearly all of this. The day can split and rejoin without anyone negotiating.

Ages and riding

Led rides and arena work suit young children at many properties. Riding out among game is a different proposition and is generally reserved for competent, independent riders regardless of age.

We would rather build a family journey where the strong riders go out properly and the younger ones ride safely at home base than compromise both.

Fewer moves, longer stays

Three nights minimum in each place. Two is a transit; three is a stay. Children settle, guides learn them, and the trip stops feeling like a schedule.

Conservation

What a private conservancy actually is

Land leased from the families who own it, bed-night fees that fund those leases, and rules set locally rather than nationally. A plain explanation of the model.

Practical

Packing for a 15kg soft bag

Light-aircraft weight limits shape every fly-in safari. What to bring, what to leave in Nairobi, and why laundry solves most of it.
