Why photographic journeys are built backwards from sunrise and sunset, and what to ask of a camp before you book it.
Build the day backwards
A photographic journey is planned from two fixed points: the forty minutes after sunrise and the forty before sunset. Everything else — meals, transfers, rest — arranges itself around them.
That sounds obvious and is routinely ignored. Camps with fixed dining hours quietly cost you the best light of the day.
Ask about the vehicle
Open sides, beanbags, a low seat, no more than four guests, and a driver who understands angle rather than proximity. A private vehicle is not a luxury here; it is the equipment.
Riding and cameras
Photographing from the saddle is possible but limited, and never at pace. On riding journeys we usually pair a morning ride with an afternoon vehicle session so neither discipline compromises the other.
